You've got suckers' luck
Have you given up?
Does it feel like a trial?
Does it trouble your mind
The way you trouble mine?

GENERAL

NAME: Reid Presley Wainwright
NICKNAMES: None
AGE/DOB/ZODIAC: 17 / January 22 / Aquarius
BLOOD STATUS: Muggleborn
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Male, he/him
SEXUALITY: Demiromantic pansexual. Reid's boyfriend, Xavier Lewis, graduated last year and Reid's not budging. He's determined to wait out the year and stay together. This is the longest relationship Reid's ever been in, but before Xavier he was known for having his share of lukewarm flings.
HOMETOWN: Chicago, Illinois, United States

CONCEPT: Gifted Seeker and stilted prefect with the emotional range of a brick.

PHYSICAL

APPEARANCE: Tall, athletic, and with striking features, Reid is memorable to say the least. Within seconds of speaking to him, though, it becomes clear Reid's a little unusual. His range of facial expressions is very limited, but his body language is graceful and fluid. As for his dress, Reid looks like the sort of guy who shops exclusively at mega mart stores, and in the morning just grabs whatever is cleanest. He has no sense of style, and wears ill-fitting, cheap clothing. Everything matches only because each item is so inoffensive it has no choice but to look passable with whatever he pairs with it.

HEIGHT: 5'11"

PB: Ezra Miller

PERSONALITY

LIKES: Flying, Quidditch, his team, archery, birds, heights, cliffs, rooftops, balconies, trees, climbing, parkour, rollercoasters, drop rides, Transfiguration, trying new food, pangolins, the sensation of freefalling

DISLIKES: Being fussed over, when he tells a joke and it's too deadpan and everyone takes him seriously, putting out effort, letting people down, classes, tests, Chicago, aggression, being pushed to participate, small talk, hitting the ground after falling

PERSONALITY:
Reid is notoriously eccentric, and he's as weird as he is unfriendly. There's something very stagnant and lazy about him, as though he sees most of existence as a burden to be endured. Then, when presented with a broom or something he can climb, Reid jumps to life with surprising speed. Reid can parkour his way up and around some very treacherous obstacles, but he's mostly interested in gaining height. In past years, Reid was known to land himself in detention regularly for breaking rules by climbing things he shouldn't, but now he's a prefect and things have changed.

It's true that Reid is unfriendly, even though he's warmed in the past year. His disposition is icy, and his face inexpressive. This is worsened by him generally being inarticulate. He keeps his statements short, and when he has to be the one to carry a conversation, he stumbles. You're lucky to get more than a couple sentences out of him, and if you do, they might be a little jumbled. He's painfully deadpan, and it hinders his ability to joke around, to the point where it's honestly hard to tell if he's joking at all. If he manages to be funny, it's usually by accident. Reid is a Coppertale, though, so shyness isn't the issue. When he wants to talk, he will. He just has shabby communication skills. And alright, maybe he is a little shy.

Reid is chronically unmotivated, and lets stronger personalities take the lead when he doesn't care, which is most of the time. School, classes, eating, just the day to day details of being a person, all seem like a bit of a chore to Reid. He spends most of his classes staring out the window, and when no one's engaging him he just kind of zones out. Luckily, there are plenty of his housemates who are willing to take charge and drag him around to where he needs to be. Apathy is an easy defense against one of the things he hates most: letting people down. When Reid cares about something or someone, he takes it very hard when things don't work out. Being a prefect has saddled him with responsibility that he's a little overwhelmed by, but the idea of falling short upsets him.

When Reid does allow himself to care, he is unstoppable. He digs in his heels, and cannot be swayed from his current goal or thought. He's innately independent, and doesn't take straight out orders well, but he's also staunchly loyal. Reid is so dedicated to his friends and responsibilities that he doesn't even entertain arguing with people about them. He just refuses the subject outright, and won't elaborate on why he disagrees or the rule that you broke. This is, admittedly, mostly because he often struggles to find the right words. When Reid has to debate with anyone, it's easy to talk circles around him. So instead, he just tries to shut things down with pure, uncomplicated stubbornness.

He's fairly nonconfrontational in that way. He's not passive or agreeable like a Ribbonfin, though. Reid avoiding an argument is petty, snippy, and often leaves the fight at the point when he thinks it'll be most frustrating. On the surface, his quiet, "mysterious" nature makes him seem older than his 16 years, but Reid is as immature as any teenager. There are other ways besides yelling to let people know he's annoyed, and there's never any question when Reid's unhappy with a situation or person. Reid's, unfortunately, good at finding creative ways to be difficult. He wields his disinterest like a weapon to further fire up people who are already upset at him. Reid figured out long ago that nothing gets people furious like acting apathetic about it.

Although this is not to say no one can get under Reid's skin. In fact, he's incredibly easy to make uncomfortable. Teasing and flirting always get him out of sorts, and when you land a good one on him, it's all over his face. He becomes visibly frustrated, and tries to squirm away from the conversation as quickly as he can. Reid acts untouchable, but the truth is that he's sensitive and awkward. He lacks the social graces to deal with people who want to embarrass him, even if they're doing so as a friend. Even mild teasing and gestures of affection get him red in the face and sullenly avoiding eye contact.

When the topic gets heavy or Reid is pushed too far, though, he has a cutting temper. He becomes sharp, cold and unforgiving, but it never lasts long. He can be brutally honest when he's angry, but it's over with almost as quickly as it comes on.

Despite everything, Reid craves connections with other people, and doesn't like isolation. He's especially dedicated to his team, even if he can be a deeply frustrating teammate. As long as they put out effort for him, Reid will do the same in return. Anyone who makes a real effort to get to know him, or helps him smooth out social interactions, or who tries to get him excited or interested in things... Reid will warm up to them surprisingly quickly. He's not terribly demonstrative about his affections, but he would go above and beyond for a friend. Or anyone, really, since Reid has a soft heart under all those cold layers. If he sees a person no one is helping, he'll silently go over and do it. If a friend calls on him, he'll be there. Reid will always be a bit of an ice prince, though, and his attempts to be gentle are often full of serious frowning as he attempts to be sincere.

tl;dr
+ good heart, kind person
+ loyal to his friends and team
+ unstoppable when he has a goal
+ easy to befriend with a little effort
= loves heights and flying
= parkours up onto buildings, climbs trees
= usually lets other people take charge
- lazy 75% of the time
- icy and unfriendly, a little bit shy
- awkward, atrocious at expressing himself
- unyielding
- less mature than he seems
- very easy to agitate/embarrass

SKILLS

LANGUAGES SPOKEN: English, and even that's hard for him sometimes.

PATRONUS: He can't cast one, but if he could it would be the same as his animagus form: a mute swan.

SKILLS:
  • Quidditch: Reid is at Gooseberry on a Quidditch scholarship and it shows. He's an exceptionally talented Seeker with a reputation for being a wild card in the worst kind of way. While he can boast a near perfect season last year, one of those catches was a dire miscalculation. Reid caught the Snitch before his team could score enough points, and it cost Coppertale the cup. The year before that, Coppertale won, but Reid couldn't be relied on not to get distracted in the middle of the game.

  • Parkour: Over the years, Reid has had a lot of time alone in the big city.
One of the ways he passed time was to learn parkour. Reid's agile and athletic, and hasn't let being in the woods stop him from climbing, flipping and jumping over anything that looks sturdy enough.

  • Animagus/Transfiguration Whiz: Transfiguration is the only class that Reid is actually good at. Concepts and equations come to him easily, although he struggles to explain it. If asked why something works, Reid's unable to answer. Last year, he mastered his Animagus form, which is a mute swan.

HISTORY

FAMILY MEMBERS:
⇢ Abigail Wainwright, mother, muggle, E.R. nurse. Abigail works long shifts as a nurse, and feels unappreciated at work. She worries about how much time Reid spends by himself.
⇢ Joel Wainwright, father, muggle, bus driver, part time security guard. Joel is a mellow man who takes working two jobs in stride. He even (eventually) took the revelation that his son was a wizard pretty well. Reid was always a strange kid.

HISTORY:
CHILDHOOD. Reid was born to a muggle couple that wasn't sure if they were ready to have a kid. The Wainwrights had money problems, and Reid certainly didn't help that. They were loving parents, though, and Reid didn't lack support as a child. Unfortunately, they were also very busy. Reid grew up fast, and learned to take care of himself, prepare his own meals, and be comfortable with long days alone in a small apartment. Because he was so often on his own, no one was around to witness when Reid did something supernatural or physics-breaking. His parents were quite surprised when they were told Reid was a wizard, and for two months thought it was a bizarre scam, like a more creative kind of model scouting.

ILVERMORNY. Reid attended Ilvermorny, where he went through his daily routine like a zombie, only coming to life when he had a chance to fly. His performance on the Quodpot team was remarkable, but he had no friends outside the team, and brought home lackluster grades. When summer vacations came around, Reid was lonely and listless. His parents bought him a raven for company (although they wondered exactly how legal it was to have a raven in an apartment in the city), but Reid was still dissatisfied.

Twice Reid broke the Statute of Secrecy, both for the same reason. The first time was at age twelve, his first summer home, when he took his secondhand broom up to the roof and tried to sneakily go for a ride. Having all the subtlety of a child, he was immediately spotted. The next year, Reid got smarter, and would take the bus as far out of the city as he could. He got away with flying on the outskirts of the city around empty highways twice. The third time, a muggle driver saw him, and in his shock caused a (nonfatal) car wreck. That incident went on Reid's permanent record.

GOOSEBERRY. teachers at Ilvermorny pushed for Reid to accept a sports scholarship to Gooseberry. They hoped that Gooseberry would have the space and resources to reach Reid, and to a degree, they were right. At Gooseberry Reid was just as stone-faced, but he became noticeably more comfortable. He enjoyed being outdoors more often, the subjects and clubs appealed to him, and he was made Coppertale Seeker freshman year. However, Reid was still uninterested in actual classes. He struggled to keep his grades high enough to stay at Gooseberry, and during Sophomore year had a series of sit-downs with Ms. Vector to talk about his academic standing. Only two things motivated him to keep his head above water: his Quidditch team, and Ms. Rhee talking to him about becoming an animagus.

Reid had a complicated run as Seeker, though. He was an exceptional flier and pulled off some death-defying stunts pursuing the Snitch, but he was also too independent, and cared little about winning. His sophomore year was a stressful one for Coppertale, who won the cup by the skin of their teeth. There were a number games where Reid missed the Snitch because he simply wasn't paying attention. No one was charmed when Reid dismissed their criticism, and told them his performance didn't matter because Coppertale won anyway.

JUNIOR YEAR. Reid wasn't the only one shocked when the new captain, Sy Stoker, took Seeker from him the next year. Reid had a brief stint as a mediocre Chaser, but the experience did teach him a few lessons. Namely that he couldn't continue to avoid responsibility by shutting people out. When Sy reinstated him as Seeker, he excelled, and his friendship with Sy became a little more obviously affectionate. After his first game back as Seeker, the thrill of a win buoyed him to achieve his Animagus form for the first time. Reid neglected to tell anyone, though, and instead took to wandering campus as a mysterious swan.

This is how he met Xavier Lewis, an upperclassman and reserve on the Ribbonfin Quidditch team. Reid developed a crush on Xavier, who grew fond of the swan, while also being disconcerted by the eccentric Coppertale boy who kept glowering at him. At the masquerade Reid (in disguise) kissed Xavier and then ran away, further complicating their awkwardly budding relationship. Despite all the confusion, Reid and Xavier eventually did get together, and settled into a very comfortable relationship. Their eccentricities lined up well, and Reid felt content with romance for the first time in his life.

Reid's personal life was going well, but Quidditch continued to be a source of drama and difficulties. Reid's winning streak was ended abruptly when Coppertale went up against Ribbonfin in their last game of the year. Just twenty minutes into the game, Reid caught the Snitch, essentially ruining both teams' seasons and ensuring that Coppertale would not take home the cup. Although Reid denied caring about the mistake, he took it hard, and and for once felt real investment in the game and the success of his friends. There was a lot of tension on the team after that, but Reid and Sy eventually made up, still best friends despite everything. Xavier was there for Reid to lean on through all the ups and downs.

When the creature in the forest took Xavier and Sy, Reid was upset beyond his own comprehension. He went into the woods with Rosy, Roxie, Ferdie and Olivia to get back these two people who had become indescribably important to him. Ultimately the rescue attempt was successful, but the fear and anguish Reid felt when he thought they might not get them back has stuck with Reid. After seeing their bravery and willingness to do whatever it takes to get back their friends, Reid's respect and trust in Rosy, Ferdie and Roxie grew exponentially.

LAST SUMMER The summer was calm by comparison. Reid's parents met Xavier (and liked him) and he spent time traveling to spend time with his friends. It was a dramatic change from how Reid used to spend his summers, alone and bored. Going back to school became something to dread, because Xavier would not be returning. Not to mention that Reid received some unexpected, intimidating news: he'd been chosen as the new senior Coppertale prefect.

SCHOOL

YEAR: Senior
HOUSE: Coppertale, former Thunderbird
SORTING: There was a moment where the emblems considered Reid for Ribbonfin, but in the end, there was nowhere better for him than Coppertale. His stubborn, independent nature may be a little quieter than most Coppertales, but he's carved out a place for himself that he's very comfortable with.
WAND: Fir, Enfield Horror fur, 10 inches, unyielding
FAMILIAR: A large raven named Amelia. Amelia fills the same role as an owl, except she's way more annoying because Reid has taught her how to talk. Reid dotes on his bird, and is sometimes accompanied by her outside of class.

CLASSES: [Core Classes] Charms, History of Magic, Outdoor Education, Transfiguration; [Electives] Magical Rudiments
ADVANCED STUDY: Animagus Studies (mute swan)
SENIOR PROJECT: Reid had wanted to settle for just becoming an Animagi, but Ms. Rhee is trying to convince him to aim a little higher. He really doesn't want to, but has been thinking about it.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Reid struggles academically, and as a result he keeps his class roster as barren as possible. His problem is mostly a lack of motivation, but he also struggles with writing and reading comprehension. Reid has a difficult time collecting his thoughts to write them down in any coherent fashion, which means his essays are... unfortunate. Reid finally started caring about his grades last year, but still relies on friends to remind him to study when he'd rather be napping. However, when he is enthusiastic about something, Reid is a hard working, focused student. He excels at Transfiguration and Animagus Studies, and Ms. Rhee has been a supportive advocate for keeping him at Gooseberry even when his grades flag.

EXTRACURRICULARS:
  • Quidditch Seeker Chaser Seeker: Reid's considerable talent is undermined by his personality, and his captain, Sy Stoker, is constantly stuck trying to make Reid into a workable Seeker. Some attempts have included making Reid play Chaser for a few months last year, as well as kicking him off the team for about a week. He loves his team, though, and has promised Sy that this year things will be different. Coming from Reid, that's ominous.

  • Archery: Reid enjoys the moment of quiet focus before taking a shot. He's got great aim, but likes to take his time aiming. He always loses timed competitions.

  • Prefect: After Dominic Tremblay decided to give up his prefect badge last year, against all odds it fell to Reid. The only other viable options were Sy Stoker and Casey Patterson, neither of whom are prefect material, in addition to already being captains. Reid is uncomfortable in his new role, but doesn't want to let down Ms. Vector or the underclassmen who are maybe possibly depending on him. Reid looks to Rosemary Stoker and Ferdinand Ayers for guidance on which rules to follow and which to ignore, and tends to enforce without leaving any room for arguing. Reid likes helping, but hates debate, and prefers to just take points and tell people to stop. Stop. No. Don't. Just stop.
